For years I have walked the streets of downtown West Hartford, Connecticut looked towards Savoy Pizzeria & Craft Bar and said, ‘I really want to try that place.’ Well I now no longer have to ask myself that question, the question I now ask is, ‘Why did I wait so long?’

Savoy Pizzeria & Craft Bar is located on LaSalle Road in popular West Hartford. A neighbor to Connecticut’s capital city Hartford, West Hartford offers a relaxed vibe that attracts locals and visitors to the area on a daily basis.

When you enter Savoy Pizzeria & Craft Bar the first thing that you will notice is the dimmed lights that create an easy going atmosphere. As you wait to be seated your eyes will first wander to the large bar to the right and then to the two large wood-fired brick ovens in the back of the restaurant.

We visited Savoy Pizzeria & Craft Bar, a member of the excellent Max Restaurants Group, on a Saturday but we arrived a little after 5:30 so we were able to land a table right away along the window that looked out to the street.

Our waitress was very friendly and after a scan of the menu we quickly honed in on an order of garlic bread (a special that day) and their signature pizza the Queen Margherita along with a Mama Lil’ Pilsner from their craft beer list. In addition to our selections, the menu also offers specialty red pizzas such as the Jersey Shore (meatball, fontina, cherry peppers, parmesan), Notorious P.I.G. (pulled pork, hot sausage, bacon, mozzarella), Eggplant Parmesan (fire roasted eggplant, fior di latte, roasted red peppers, spicy bread crumbs, basil) and white pizzas including Clam, Italian Street Taco (fontina, calabrian pulled pork, pico de gallo, parsley, crème fraiche, lime).

The garlic bread came first and it was delicious from the first bite. Delivered in eight slices the dough had just the right amount of crunch on the outside and softness in the middle with basil and parmesan as a topper. The dish was served with a marinara dipping sauce. Shortly after finishing our starter the Queen Margherita arrived and it was everything we could have hoped for.

Loaded with fresh red sauce and cheese with perfectly placed basil leaves the pizza exploded with flavor with each bite. What made the pizza even better was the thicker crust allowed the thin portion of the pizza to support itself and prevented the toppings from falling off.

Something to keep in mind, if you are a fan of parmesan cheese on your pizza, you won’t find a shaker at your table but if you ask your waiter or waitress they will grate some fresh parmesan either onto your plate or pizza

Once the pizza arrived at the table it didn’t take too long for it to disappear which left only one question to ask, ‘When is the next time I can make it back to Savoy Pizzeria & Craft Bar?’
